Research Interests

Clinical research design; diagnostic and prognostic studies; intervention trials, outcome measure responsiveness studies; rehabilitation; musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Current Research

  1. Clinical outcome measures in physiotherapy practice.
  2. Manual therapy and exercise interventions for hip and knee osteoarthritis.
  3. The prognosis of low back pain.
  4. Accuracy and validity of manual therapists' clinical examination for assessing segmental motion of the spine.
  5. The design of a computer program for the semi-automated analysis of spinal segmental motion.

Teaching Interests

Postgraduate research degree supervision; clinical education in musculoskeletal physiotherapy; clinical examination and assessment; research methodologies; human functional anatomy.

Personal Statement

Haxby is currently committed full-time to research, on several external research contracts with the Health Research Council and Lottery Health. He has a keen interest in the broad area of clinical research design and biostatistics.

Haxby's areas of research and teaching expertise include musculoskeletal clinical examination, human functional anatomy, and clinical research design & evaluation. He has previously held positions as Visiting Research Fellow in the Division of Physical Therapy, University of Utah, USA; Assistant Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy & Structural Biology, University of Otago; and Instructor in the Physical Therapy program, University of St Augustine for Health Sciences, Florida, USA.
